Explanation legend Lean4 Domain Explanation Language (L4DEL)

L4DEL explanations are a separate layer. They do not change the Lean source. Intuition is explanatory prose; numbered items are a reading path; sources link the wording back to evidence.

    Source documentation

    Let $E\subseteq (0,1)$ be a meaurable subset with Lebesgue measure $\lambda(E)$. Is it true that, for almost all $\alpha$, $$\lim_{n\to \infty}\frac{1}{n}\sum_{1\leq k\leq n}1_{\{k\alpha \}\in E}=\lambda(E)$$ for all $E$?

This is a conjecture of Khintchine [Kh23] (with the exceptional null set of $\alpha$ allowed to depend on $E$). It is false, and was disproved by Marstrand [Ma70].

    Source documentation

Read literally, with "for almost all $\alpha$" placed before "for all $E$", the statement is trivially false: for any $\alpha$, removing the countable orbit $\{\{k\alpha\} : k\geq 1\}$ from $(0,1)$ gives a measurable set of measure $1$ which is never visited.
